Life Studies

Life studies are usually nude. It can be more challenging to get the proportions right when the model is wearing clothes.  This is why artists study the nude figure.

Life Study session at the Art's centre in Furgus, Ontario.

This model was excellent at setting poses that

were different and I really enjoyed the opportunity to draw him.

This study is drawn with pen and ink (sepia and blue),

brush and water, and a touch of White acrylic,

on brown/grey pastel paper which had

been pre-treated with clear gesso.

Another Life class (Oh I do miss them!). This took place in

Kitchener, Ontario. Just a group of artists getting together.

It's very difficult to find good models. I used the

Staedtler pen to start this painting on board, and added colour in acrylic

Again a model with experience offering a multitude

of difficult (for us painters) poses. Very inspiring.

This is a very small painting.

I wasn't happy about this position.

I sketched it on the canvas with a pen and

added oil paint at a later date.

It is only 8" x 6"

I was an elected member of the Arts & Letters Club of Toronto.

They have a fabulous large studio, with good lighting and lots of props

(usually borrowed from the drama department).

The beautiful chaise longue in the background has seen

better days and was beginning to fall apart. So the model had

to sit on the ground, just in case there was an accident.

I love doing quick painting studies in oils.

This was another one day pose. From a little further back in

time at the Amersham Hall, where we gathered for our

injection of inspiration. Thanks to Anne Murrogh this facility

was on offer every Monday except Christmas Day.
